Sanibel & Captiva, Florida

Where to stay

Captiva

Birding Captiva

Captiva lives here rather than on its own domain — d49 — because Sanibel carries the search and the brand, and splitting the two would weaken both. Cross at Blind Pass and keep going north.

Turner Beach

Captiva side of Blind Pass

The Captiva bank of the pass: beach, jetty and open Gulf.

The other side of the same water, and a different angle on it. Worth crossing the bridge for when the light is wrong on the Sanibel side.

Captiva Beach and Redfish Pass

North end of Captiva

Gulf beach running up to a second tidal pass at the island’s north tip.

The least-walked shoreline in the chain, with another pass doing what Blind Pass does. Getting to the north end takes commitment, which is exactly why birds are there.
